Starting from December of 2023 till August of 2024, we invited youths living in sub-divided units in Sham Shui Po and Yau Tsim Mong to participate in a series of art workshops.

Pine Cone Painting Workshop

In the Pinecone Painting Workshop, youths learned about the humble pinecone’s role in the ecosystem and decorated real pinecones with vibrant, eco-friendly paints. This was the first time many of the youths had seen a pinecone in real life, making this workshop a unique experience that resonated with many of the parents’ positive feedback after the workshop.

HK Plant Puzzle Workshops

During the HK Plant Puzzle Workshops, youths learned about native Hong Kong plants by decorating puzzle pieces that, when put together, formed a unique collage inspired by the beauty of the specimens we introduced and unique heritage sites located in Sham Shui Po and Yau Ma Tei. The facts and specimens used for this workshop and others as well were recommended by ecologists from the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, our programme’s knowledge partner and expert advisor.

When Heritage Meets Time Workshops

The programme emphasized teaching youth about Hong Kong’s cultural heritage. In one such workshop series, students learned about how bamboo steamers are created, from the time the bamboo is grown and harvested to how master craftsmen weave them into the steamers we often see while eating dim sum. Cindy Tai, an artisan who specialises in heritage crafts, came to teach our students how to weave their own bamboo steamers in various designs using colourful bamboo strips.

In another series of workshops, students learned the art of crafting flower buttons that are commonly seen on the traditional Chinese cheongsam. Instruction was provided by the Cultural Inheritance and Development Foundation, which taught students how to fold ribbons of different colours to create buttons of different designs, each with its own cultural meaning.

Design X Sustainability Talk

To help promote sustainable practices in Hong Kong’s design industry, we invited Mr. Alan Cheung M.H. to lecture about sustainable design principles and how they can be used to solve social problems and create a sustainable future. We also invited Mr. Ron Leung to share about his work as an artist and how he implements sustainable thinking into product design. The lecture was attended by students from the HK Design Institute, CBCC School of Design, the HK Metropolitan University, the City University of Hong Kong, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Outstanding artworks created by the youths from all of these workshops were featured for public viewing at the Mother Nature and Our Next Generation Exhibition, which became open to the public on July 10th. Design students who attended the Design X Sustainability Talk also received hands-on experience with the docent process for the exhibition. Through these workshops and the exhibition, we ultimately aim to help young people broaden their horizons by empowering their personal growth and mental health through art creation.

The workshop consisted of guiding children and volunteers to upcycle Japanese seashells to form a series of public art installations named “Mizu” (Water), “Kawa” (River) and “Umi” (Sea). Followed by interviews with fifth-generation fishermen to create artwork inspired by oracle bone script to learn not only about Chinese culture but also on how we can protect the environment and be more thoughtful of marine life through art.

The purpose of the exhibition is to ultimately work towards building a more sustainable community through showcasing art. Thus, it was important to us that we align with the goals of sustainability put forth by the United Nations, specifically goals 12, 14, and 17, “responsible consumption and production”, “life below water” and “partnerships for the goals” respectively.

Leading a team of artists from France, US, and China, Yeung partnered with companies that support corporate social responsibility such as JC Group, Mainetti Retail Solutions Worldwide and Aqua House Hong Kong to provide recycled materials for the exhibition pushing our narrative of sustainable art. In the span of one week, the exhibition managed to reach 7,000 people,

Through a creative combination of the recycling symbol and the Chinese character for “Family”, this art piece calls for swift action to reduce consumer products made of single-use plastics.

Businesses have an important role to play in responsible production and consumption – a message that was echoed by both Mr. Joakim Ladeborn, Deputy Consul General of Consular General of Sweden in HK, and Alan Cheung, Chairman of the Committee on Promoting Corporate Social Responsibility of FHKI,

during their speech at the 2018 launch event for the @UNEP #BeatPlasticPollution Family Day. To further amplify this message, the art piece created by event participants out of recycling plastic bottles was then transformed into floral decorations for elderly homes and water containers for the homeless.

For UNEP #BeatPlasticPollution Family Day, we partnered with 30 corporations and NGOs, including the Swedish Chamber of Commerce,

Christian Family Service Centre, and FOOD-CO, to create eco-friendly art with underprivileged families, single elderly persons, and other community members from all walks of life. The event was an outstanding success – serving more than 2000 people across 10 districts, from Sham Shui Po, Central to Mui Wo, and spurring #AoMYF to organise more green arts events to promote sustainable living.
